Lockheed Martin First Systems Integrator to Join Cloud Security Alliance

GAITHERSBURG, Md., July 28, 2010 -- Lockheed Martin today announced it has joined the Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) as a corporate member and the first systems integrator to promote the use of best practices for providing security assurance within cloud computing. Lockheed Martin will support the Cloud Security Alliance's initiatives through collaboration and partnership with other alliance members to address key security concerns and trust issues pertaining to adoption of cloud computing.

"Lockheed Martin is working with a variety of customers in government, energy and health IT markets who are seeking the benefits associated with cloud computing yet often come to us for guidance about how best to deliver cloud services on their enterprise including which service providers, technologies and applications to integrate. We are anxious to collaborate with the CSA members to share and recommend ways to meet security concerns and to continue to build awareness and trust among our public and private sector customers as it relates to cloud adoption," said Rick Johnson, Chief Technology Officer and Vice President, Lockheed Martin Information Systems & Global Solutions.

"We are pleased to see Lockheed Martin join the Cloud Security Alliance as the first major systems integrator to come on board. This sends a message to the marketplace about the significance of cloud computing to both the government and industry. Lockheed Martin's experience working with enterprise public sector and private sector customers gives them a unique vantage point and will bring us valuable insight as we develop our guidance and best practices," said Jim Reavis, co-founder and Executive Director of the Cloud Security Alliance.

Lockheed Martin and its Cyber Security Alliance, formed in 2009, recently conducted a public sector survey to measure attitudes about cloud computing and cyber security topics. Among its findings, the survey revealed that 70% of government technology decision makers in federal, defense/military and intelligence agencies were most concerned about data security, privacy and integrity in the cloud. A white paper titled "Awareness, Trust, and Security to Shape Cloud Adoption" was written to share details and findings and can be viewed online.

The Cloud Security Alliance is a not-for-profit organization with a mission to promote the use of best practices for providing security assurance within Cloud Computing, and to provide education on the uses of Cloud Computing to help secure all other forms of computing. The Cloud Security Alliance is led by a broad coalition of industry practitioners, corporations, associations and other key stakeholders. Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 136,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation's 2009 sales from continuing operations were $44.5 billion.

On Par for 2 Billion: 3PAR Discusses Cloud Strategy

Storage vendor 3PAR has been at the heart of an intense bidding war between HP and Dell due to its unique refinements and developments in virtualized storage platform concepts. Thin provisioning and a focus on the needs of large-scale enterprises and cloud providers have catapulted the company into the public eye but as 3PAR's Craig Nunes discusses with HPC in the Cloud, the cloud strategy has been consistent since 1999--even if the world is just taking notice now.

Busting the "Cloud in a Box" Myth

The concept of private clouds is gaining traction and due to the buzz, more enterprises are taking a much closer look at the possibility—if they haven’t taken steps to virtualize some or all of their infrastructure already. For those who have not yet made the transition, a lack of understanding of the complex process behind private cloud implementation is at the core of hesitancy, therefore vendors are looking for ways to convince users to fear not, the private cloud is not only within reach—but simple to step into.

Achieving Ultra High Performance in the Cloud

Companies in competitive domains, such as financial services, create large data repositories containing significant amounts of data collected from daily operations. Using supercomputers to analyze these massive datasets might yield the highest level of performance, but this is prohibitively expensive. Using proprietary, custom-built HPC atop cloud environments is also a viable option--although one that does come with a series of drawbacks that must be mitigated to achieve critical performance levels.
