Clearing the Cloudy Air

Blog: The Essence of 'On-Demand'

Personally, I have had my fill of cloud computing for a while. However, a recent spate of media coverage decrying the paradigm altogether has me feeling like I woke up in an enterprise computing Bizarro World, where the discussion looks the same, but is, in fact, entirely different than anything actually going on in this universe. Thus, I feel compelled to write once again about the cloud.

Grid vs. Cloud vs. What Really Matters
Post Date: August 22, 2008 @ 2:46 PM, Pacific Daylight Time
Blog: The Essence of 'On-Demand'

Is anyone else just plain sick and tired of bloggers trying to decipher the difference between cloud computing and grid computing? I think every other one of my news alerts is on this subject. Don't get me wrong, I'm as guilty as the next guy when it comes to arguing over semantics, but, at this point, there doesn't even seem to be room for confusion when it comes to these two computing paradigms -- at least when we're talking connotation.

Where Clean Energy and IT Meet
Post Date: August 20, 2008 @ 12:04 PM, Pacific Daylight Time
Blog: The Essence of 'On-Demand'

I spent yesterday at the National Clean Energy Summit, and I couldn't help but think of the IT world and how important the push for green IT really is. I also couldn't help but notice how enterprise computing is a microcosm of the greater energy crisis.

Cloud Takes Best in Show, but HPC Trumps it in Survey
Post Date: August 20, 2008 @ 9:25 AM, Pacific Daylight Time
Blog: The Essence of 'On-Demand'

So, I spent a couple of days in San Francisco last week for the Next Generation Data Center conference, and it should come as no surprise that cloud computing was among the most popular topics, but hardly stole the show (from my perspective, at least).

Cloud Hype on the Hype Cycle
Post Date: August 17, 2008 @ 11:30 PM, Pacific Daylight Time
Blog: The Essence of 'On-Demand'

Now, I promise this publication is not all about cloud computing, but it’s just too interesting, too hyped and too in the news not to play a relatively big role for the foreseeable future. Take, for example, Gartner’s latest Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, which places cloud computing on the Technology Trigger zone, rapidly approaching the Peak of Inflated Expectations.

Quality, not Quantity
Post Date: July 28, 2008 @ 10:47 AM, Pacific Daylight Time
Blog: The Essence of 'On-Demand'

If a week like last week proves anything, it's that news is about quality, not quantity. GRIDtoday Editor Derrick Harris highlights the big news from an otherwise slow cycle and discusses why relatively small users like Apple iPhone School are the immediate future of cloud computing.

Cloud Computing's Defense Future
Post Date: July 21, 2008 @ 4:25 PM, Pacific Daylight Time
Blog: The Essence of 'On-Demand'

GRIDtoday Editor Derrick Harris takes a closer look at the Department of Defense's recently announced cloud computing initiative for testing and development. According to an HP Federal executive, the current cloud likely will encompass grid capabilities in the future, and, in the years to come, cloud computing could become the resource procurement paradigm for the DoD as a whole.

Cloud Draws Skepticism Today, but Could Draw Billions Tomorrow
Post Date: July 14, 2008 @ 11:36 AM, Pacific Daylight Time
Blog: The Essence of 'On-Demand'

GRIDtoday Editor Derrick Harris examines the link between cloud computing security concerns and the delineation between that technology and the increasingly virtualized world of managed hosting. For today, it seems like hosting has more to offer the enterprise, but major investment firms see much momentum and much money associated with cloud services as they mature.

Citrix CTO Simon Crosby on Battling VMware
Post Date: July 07, 2008 @ 11:33 AM, Pacific Daylight Time
Blog: The Essence of 'On-Demand'

GRIDtoday Editor Derrick Harris shares the result of his wide-ranging interview with Citrix CTO Simon Crosby. Tackling a variety of subjects, from cloud computing to Microsoft's Hyper-V solution, Crosby always makes sure to differentiate between XenServer and VMware, making the battle lines crystal clear.

Cloud Computing's Identity Crisis: Does a Definition Matter?
Post Date: June 30, 2008 @ 11:35 AM, Pacific Daylight Time
Blog: The Essence of 'On-Demand'

GRIDtoday Editor Derrick Harris recaps last week's Structure 08 conference, among the first to focus on cloud computing, and gives his opinions on what he heard and learned. Although the event reaffirmed that we are nowhere near a consensus on the definition of cloud computing, Harris posits that it might not matter as long user excitement and enterprise interest remain high.

CometCloud: Using a Federated HPC-Cloud to Understand Fluid Flow in Microchannels

The ever-growing complexity of scientific and engineering problems continues to pose new computational challenges. Thus, we present a novel federation model that enables end-users with the ability to aggregate heterogeneous resource scale problems. The feasibility of this federation model has been proven, in the context of the UberCloud HPC Experiment, by gathering the most comprehensive information to date on the effects of pillars on microfluid channel flow.

CERN, Google, and the Future of Global Science Initiatives

Large-scale, worldwide scientific initiatives rely on some cloud-based system to both coordinate efforts and manage computational efforts at peak times that cannot be contained within the combined in-house HPC resources. Last week at Google I/O, Brookhaven National Lab’s Sergey Panitkin discussed the role of the Google Compute Engine in providing computational support to ATLAS, a detector of high-energy particles at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
