SAN DIEGO, Calif., Jan. 9 – Nirvanix, the leader in enterprise-class cloud storage services, today announced a collaborative effort with CoreSite Realty Corporation, a national provider of powerful, network-rich data centers, to provide direct connections to Nirvanix cloud storage at CoreSite's One Wilshire data center campus in Los Angeles. By offering direct connections to Nirvanix cloud storage services, new and existing CoreSite customers can establish a private network connection between their owned or managed IT infrastructure and the Nirvanix Cloud Storage Network—providing immediate access to the Nirvanix Cloud File System designed to support millions of users, billions of objects and exabytes of data. With this service, customers can bypass Internet service providers to improve throughput, gain consistent network performance, enhance security, and reduce costs while adding cloud storage capabilities to their existing IT portfolio.
"Nirvanix is the most logical progression from the enterprise data center to the enterprise cloud for applications such as backup, archive and large-scale content collaboration," said Dru Borden, CEO of Nirvanix. "As a result of this collaborative effort, CoreSite customers running a cloud computing environment or a SAN storage infrastructure can now establish an immediate and direct connection into our cloud storage services for on-demand storage capacity, availability and bandwidth. This provides them with anytime, anywhere data access through live replicas spread across a global grid, enabling workflow and content collaboration across multiple diverse locations while maintaining data consistency."
Nirvanix is the only cloud storage services provider to offer private, hybrid, and public deployment options. CoreSite customers who choose Nirvanix Hybrid Cloud Storage have an optimal solution, including a fast direct connection to a Nirvanix node deployed at the secure CoreSite data center, enabling them to maintain cloud storage capacity on premises for frequently accessed or confidential data plus access to the Nirvanix public cloud for on-demand capacity and bandwidth, supporting cloudbursting during peak business hours.
"Many of our customers are looking to connect their IT infrastructure directly to their cloud service providers to improve performance and security while reducing costs," said Jarrett Appleby, COO of CoreSite. "The CoreSite Mesh brings together the community of service providers and we are pleased that Nirvanix's industry-leading, enterprise-class cloud storage services are a part of that community, helping enable CoreSite customers to propel growth and meet business goals."
CoreSite customers can directly connect to Nirvanix Cloud Storage services via a standard, single-mode fiber 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps Ethernet cross connection or Any2 internet exchange connection, ordered via the MyCoreSite online customer portal. In addition, customers have concurrent access to public and private resources. Nirvanix direct connections can be partitioned into multiple logical connections, enabling customers to use the same physical connection to access public and private resources.
CoreSite Realty Corporation is a national provider of data center products and interconnection services. More than 750 customers such as Global 1000 enterprises, communications providers, cloud and content companies, financial firms, media and entertainment, healthcare, and government agencies choose CoreSite for the confidence that comes with customer-focused data center products, service and support systems, and scalability. Large-scale, worldwide scientific initiatives rely on some cloud-based system to both coordinate efforts and manage computational efforts at peak times that cannot be contained within the combined in-house HPC resources. Last week at Google I/O, Brookhaven National Lab’s Sergey Panitkin discussed the role of the Google Compute Engine in providing computational support to ATLAS, a detector of high-energy particles at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
Frank Ding, engineering analysis & technical computing manager at Simpson Strong-Tie, discussed the advantages of utilizing the cloud for occasional scientific computing, identified the obstacles to doing so, and proposed workarounds to some of those obstacles.
The private industry least likely to adopt public cloud services for data storage are financial institutions. Holding the most sensitive and heavily-regulated of data types, personal financial information, banks and similar institutions are mostly moving towards private cloud services – and doing so at great cost.

When it comes to cloud, long distances mean unacceptably high latencies. Researchers from the University of Bonn in Germany examined those latency issues of doing CFD modeling in the cloud by utilizing a common CFD and its utilization in HPC instance types including both CPU and GPU cores of Amazon EC2.
