SURFmarket Teams up with GreenQloud for Higher Education

REYKJAVIK, Iceland, Nov. 26 – GreenQloud, the world’s first Truly Green Cloud Computing Service (IaaS) powered by 100% renewable energy, announced today an agreement with ICT marketplace SURFmarket, in Utrecht, the Netherlands. As part of this agreement Dutch universities, research facilities, instructors and students get the opportunity to manage websites, web storage, backups and key-value databases, as well as scale web apps and conduct scientific computing at a significantly reduced cost and with a lower carbon footprint.

SURF, the parent organization of SURFmarket, is recognized as the leader in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) innovation in higher education and research in the Netherlands. Within this SURF connection the Dutch higher education institutions are able to collaborate and work together in determining their cloud strategy.

By partnering with SURFmarket as an authorized reseller, Greenqloud has the unique opportunity to help universities and research facilities as well as instructors and students greatly reduce both their computing costs and carbon footprint.

GreenQloud offers two cloud computing services: Compute Qloud and Storage Qloud. Compute Qloud can be utilized for easy server and application deployment while Storage Qloud is best for file management and back up storage, featuring drag & drop multi-file uploads. The GreenQloud management console enables customers to efficiently monitor usage statistics, server load graphs, bandwidth stats, the number of servers running, total storage used, estimated billing. GreenQloud’s Truly Green dashboard in the management console uniquely allows customers to monitor energy metrics and carbon emissions savings, which can be used to augment a company’s existing sustainability program.

“Signing our reseller agreement with SURFmarket after an intensive trial period is proof positive of Greenqloud’s potential to ease the management, cost and carbon footprint of educational and scientific data,” said Eirikur Hrafnsson, Co-founder and Chief Global Strategist of GreenQloud. “It also serves to demonstrate how the adoption of cloud computing in this important industry sector can greatly impact the efficiency of research and education.”

“We are pleased to announce this agreement between SURFmarket and Greenqloud. This agreement is not only an important addition to our portfolio of cloud services, but it is the first IaaS provider with whom an agreement has been signed. From the SURF perspective it also provides practical tools for promoting sustainability within higher education: Greenqloud makes it possible to create virtual machines in the cloud by using 100% green electricity and cooling. The Icelandic energy network is in fact completely green. By making use of Icelandic computer resources a substantial amount of CO2 will be saved”, said Jan Bakker Managing, Director SURFmarket.
