Reduced advance registration rate ends Sept. 15 for Sept. 24-25 conference
MANNHEIM, Germany, Sept. 7 — For many HPC users thinking of moving their workload to the cloud, the idea of having a user-friendly "front end" and no longer having to concern themselves with the back end of computing is a strong incentive. But a panel of experts speaking at the Sept. 24-25 ISC Cloud'12 conference in Mannheim will explain that a number of important considerations still loom behind a move to the cloud.

Paolo Balboni, who is the founding partner at ICT Legal Consulting, and Director of the European Privacy Association, Cloud Computing Sector Director and responsible for Foreign Affairs of Italian Institute for Privacy, will talk about the Legal Aspects of Cloud Computing in a panel on HPC Cloud Challenges. According to Balboni, prior to migrating to the cloud, companies should carefully verify the data privacy and data security policy of cloud service providers and choose the one that offers a high level of data protection. Moreover, companies should also regularly monitor the data protection compliance of the selected cloud service provider and look into limitations and exclusions of liability clauses. In fact, not paying attention to these issues could leave the company – not the cloud provider – legally and financially responsible for any data leaks or losses.
This panel will examine the potential obstacles to cloud adoption, such as security and trust, compliance, outsourcing, performance, virtualization, pricing, payment model, software licenses, choice of service provider or private cloud builder, network bandwidth, and integration of all of these into existing business or research processes.

Thus, we present a novel federation model that enables end-users with the ability to aggregate heterogeneous resource scale problems. The feasibility of this federation model has been proven, in the context of the UberCloud HPC Experiment, by gathering the most comprehensive information to date on the effects of pillars on microfluid channel flow.
Large-scale, worldwide scientific initiatives rely on some cloud-based system to both coordinate efforts and manage computational efforts at peak times that cannot be contained within the combined in-house HPC resources. Last week at Google I/O, Brookhaven National Lab’s Sergey Panitkin discussed the role of the Google Compute Engine in providing computational support to ATLAS, a detector of high-energy particles at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
Frank Ding, engineering analysis & technical computing manager at Simpson Strong-Tie, discussed the advantages of utilizing the cloud for occasional scientific computing, identified the obstacles to doing so, and proposed workarounds to some of those obstacles.

When it comes to cloud, long distances mean unacceptably high latencies. Researchers from the University of Bonn in Germany examined those latency issues of doing CFD modeling in the cloud by utilizing a common CFD and its utilization in HPC instance types including both CPU and GPU cores of Amazon EC2.
