Puppet Labs Announces Integration with VMware vFabric Application Director

The Puppet Integration Service provides VMware vFabric Application Director customers with the productivity and agility benefits of software-defined infrastructure

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 27 — Today at VMworld 2012, Puppet Labs, the leading provider of IT automation software for system administrators, announced its integration solution for VMware vFabric Application Director, a cloud-enabled application provisioning solution that simplifies how to create and standardize portable application deployment topologies across cloud services. Puppet Labs will demonstrate its new integration service in booth number 2323 at VMworld 2012 in the San Francisco Moscone Center.

The Puppet integration service, which is currently available for download in the beta release of the VMware Cloud Application Management marketplace, enables VMware vFabric Application Director customers to use Puppet's configuration language to describe their infrastructure. The solution also gives users the option to leverage Puppet Forge modules as building blocks to create services for VMware vFabric Application Director, further accelerating the deployment and management of applications on VMware-based clouds.

"VMware vFabric Application Director is already a powerful solution for automating the provisioning of applications in hybrid cloud environments," said Ramin Sayar, vice president and general manager, Virtualization and Cloud Management, VMware. "With Puppet Labs' integration solution for the VMware vFabric Application Director, customers can deploy software-defined infrastructure much more rapidly and efficiently, and leverage their existing investment in Puppet modules."

"The integration between Puppet Enterprise and VMware vFabric Application Director will be great for customers of both Puppet Labs and VMware," said Luke Kanies, founder and CEO of Puppet Labs. "Using Puppet's configuration language, VMware vFabric Application Director customers will be able to more easily and rapidly automate the provisioning, configuration and management of hybrid cloud applications."

Key Capabilities

  • Software-Defined Infrastructure. The Puppet integration with VMware vFabric Application Director enables system administrators to deploy software-defined infrastructure, empowering them to programmatically provision, configure, and manage servers, network devices, and storage, in the data center or in the cloud.
  • Automated Provisioning. VMware vFabric Application Director takes a model-driven, open approach to simplifying and automating deployment topologies of multi-tier complex applications in hybrid clouds. With Puppet Labs' integration solution for the product, users can rapidly deploy reusable, standardized application configurations encapsulated in portable cloud application blueprints.
  • Access to a Library of Configuration Solutions. The Puppet integration service for VMware vFabric Application Director provides users the option to leverage pre-existing modules from Puppet Forge as building blocks to automate the deployment of popular applications across public and private cloud environments.

CometCloud: Using a Federated HPC-Cloud to Understand Fluid Flow in Microchannels

The ever-growing complexity of scientific and engineering problems continues to pose new computational challenges. Thus, we present a novel federation model that enables end-users with the ability to aggregate heterogeneous resource scale problems. The feasibility of this federation model has been proven, in the context of the UberCloud HPC Experiment, by gathering the most comprehensive information to date on the effects of pillars on microfluid channel flow.

CERN, Google, and the Future of Global Science Initiatives

Large-scale, worldwide scientific initiatives rely on some cloud-based system to both coordinate efforts and manage computational efforts at peak times that cannot be contained within the combined in-house HPC resources. Last week at Google I/O, Brookhaven National Lab’s Sergey Panitkin discussed the role of the Google Compute Engine in providing computational support to ATLAS, a detector of high-energy particles at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
