Mirantis to discuss continuous deployment for OpenStack
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 4 — Jason Venner, senior director at Mirantis, a leader in engineering services for OpenStack Cloud, will be a featured speaker at Cloud Computing Expo East 2012, on June 14 in New York.
Venner, who has worked with organizations such as NASA, Dell, and Cisco on a variety of OpenStack system integration projects, will share his experience and approach by discussing DevOps for Application Infrastructure. The talk will focus on continuous deployment at the infrastructure layer as it relates to OpenStack Cloud.
OpenStack is one of the most popular open source platform for building private and public clouds. The number of code commits and the engineering velocity of this project is matched by no other technology adoption in history. While OpenStack is merely two years old, there have been six production releases of it. Those who opted to deploy an OpenStack-based cloud a year ago are now likely running production workloads on a version of OpenStack that is three releases behind.
Venner will speak about ways to use continuous deployment practices for infrastructure, just as they have been used for some time at the application level of the software stack. Cloud service providers like Internap, Amazon, and Rackspace have adopted continuous deployment practices in the context of their infrastructure cloud offerings quite some time ago. Today, the proliferation of private clouds calls for a similar approach in the enterprise context.
"In the modern age of distributed and ever-evolving infrastructure, traditional rip and replace methods of upgrading are no longer optimal," explained Venner. "The problem becomes particularly acute when dealing with open source products such as OpenStack that do not offer a clear vendor-dictated upgrade path, tooling, and supporting services."
Mirantis is a founding member of the recently-announced OpenStack Foundation. The company, which is the largest and most experienced provider of engineering services for OpenStack, has been an active member of the OpenStack community since its inception. Today, Mirantis employs more than 50 OpenStack consultants and has successfully delivered dozens of OpenStack implementation projects for organizations like Internap, Cisco, Dell, Nexenta, etc. Mirantis is also one of the key organizers of the Bay Area's OpenStack user group, hosting the quarterly community events in Silicon Valley.
In addition, the company has provided important contributions to the Dell-developed Crowbar software framework. Recently, Mirantis and Dell announced a partnership to help customers design, build and manage robust infrastructure clouds using the OpenStack open source platform.

The San Diego Supercomputer Center launched a public cloud system for universities in the area designed specifically to run on commodity hardware with high performance solid-state drives. The center, which currently holds 5.5 PB of raw storage, is open to educational and research users in the University of California.
