OpenStack and Nebula Project will be focus of discussion
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 21 — Jason Venner, senior architect at Mirantis, a leader in engineering services for OpenStack Cloud, and Ray O'Brien, NASA CTO of IT, will deliver a joint keynote address at the Glue Conference 2012, on May 24.
They will discuss the evolution of NASA's open source project and share the history of how this project originally came about, the challenges faced by the agency's project team as OpenStack continued to evolve, and preview the roadmap for the future of OpenStack.
Project Nebula is NASA's open-source cloud computing project and service developed to provide an alternative to the costly construction of additional data centers whenever NASA scientist or engineers require additional data processing. The Nebula project also provides a simplified avenue for NASA scientists and researchers to share large, complex data sets with external partners and the public.
During the last two years, NASA has become increasingly active in the open source community and has demonstrated significant leadership in this area through its technology initiatives.
The agency introduced open.NASA.gov, its open, collaborative platform for the Open Government community to share information about projects and successes. NASA's Open Government activities include two major initiatives in open source: making open source software development more collaborative and the Nebula project.
Mirantis is a founding member of the recently-announced OpenStack Foundation. The company, which is the largest and most experienced provider of engineering services for OpenStack, has been an active member of the OpenStack community since its inception and has contributed continuously to the OpenStack Compute and Identity projects. Mirantis is one of the key organizers of the Bay Area's OpenStack user group, hosting the quarterly community events in Silicon Valley.
In addition, the company has provided important contributions to the Dell-developed Crowbar software framework, and last month, Mirantis and Dell announced a partnership to help customers design, build, and manage enterprise-grade clouds using OpenStack Technology.
Mirantis is an engineering services company delivering expertise in open source application infrastructure and OpenStack. Clients include Cisco, Dell, GE Money and Agilent. The company is headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., and currently houses one of the largest groups of experts in OpenStack under a single roof. Mirantis works with middleware vendors, compute infrastructure companies, and Fortune 1000 enterprises, helping them to extract value from OpenStack.
Researchers from the Suddhananda Engineering and Research Centre in Bhubaneswar, India developed a job scheduling system, which they call Service Level Agreement (SLA) scheduling, that is meant to achieve acceptable methods of resource provisioning similar to that of potential in-house systems. They combined that with an on-demand resource provisioner to ensure utilization optimization of virtual machines.
Experimental scientific HPC applications are continually being moved to the cloud, as covered here in several capacities over the last couple of weeks. Included in that rundown, Co-founder and CEO of CloudSigma Robert Jenkins penned an article for HPC in the Cloud where he discussed the emergence of cloud technologies to supplement research capabilities of big scientific initiatives like CERN and ESA (the European Space Agency)...
When considering moving excess or experimental HPC applications to a cloud environment, there will always be obstacles. With that in mind, Datapipe hopes to establish themselves as a green-savvy HPC cloud provider with their recently announced Stratosphere platform. Datapipe markets Stratosphere as a green HPC cloud service and in doing so partnering with Verne Global and their Icelandic datacenter, which is known for its propensity in green computing.

The San Diego Supercomputer Center launched a public cloud system for universities in the area designed specifically to run on commodity hardware with high performance solid-state drives. The center, which currently holds 5.5 PB of raw storage, is open to educational and research users in the University of California.
