QBE Wins $4 Million Task Order to Support US Army Cloud Computing

Leader in technology consulting continues to support on cloud computing projects

WASHINGTON, May 1 — Quality Business Engineering, a leading management and technology consulting organization for the federal government and defense community, today announced it has been awarded a $4 million task order to support the U.S. Army's expanding cloud computing initiatives.

"We're proud that QBE continues to support the Army in bringing flexible and reliable computing services to the nation's war fighters, both at home and abroad," said QBE president and CEO, Dr. Shawn Landry. "This prime task order will lay the foundation for expanding those services and provide a proving ground for cloud computing within the Department of Defense. For QBE, it is a critical milestone of our continued growth as a leading provider of technology services for the Army."

During the 18-month task order contract, QBE will provide cloud computing architecture and engineering services as well as a state-of-the-art proof-of-concept laboratory to the Army's Acquisition, Logistics and Technology Enterprise Systems and Services and Program Executive Office Enterprise Information Systems organizations.

Dr. Landry anticipates that QBE's design and engineering solution for a new Army cloud computing architecture will play a critical part in supporting ALTESS, an organization undergoing rapid change in its effort to prepare for a surge of enterprise-hosting requirements. The initiative is driven by Army leadership in an effort to improve efficiency and maintainability of all computing services Army-wide while reducing overall costs and complexity.

QBE has provided IT solutions to ALTESS for the past three years. Projects have included providing ALTESS with business and technology consulting services, helping to configure the consolidated physical and virtual infrastructure and developing a new service catalog.

CometCloud: Using a Federated HPC-Cloud to Understand Fluid Flow in Microchannels

The ever-growing complexity of scientific and engineering problems continues to pose new computational challenges. Thus, we present a novel federation model that enables end-users with the ability to aggregate heterogeneous resource scale problems. The feasibility of this federation model has been proven, in the context of the UberCloud HPC Experiment, by gathering the most comprehensive information to date on the effects of pillars on microfluid channel flow.

CERN, Google, and the Future of Global Science Initiatives

Large-scale, worldwide scientific initiatives rely on some cloud-based system to both coordinate efforts and manage computational efforts at peak times that cannot be contained within the combined in-house HPC resources. Last week at Google I/O, Brookhaven National Lab’s Sergey Panitkin discussed the role of the Google Compute Engine in providing computational support to ATLAS, a detector of high-energy particles at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

NASA Builds 'Climate in a Box'

May 23, 2013 | The study of climate change is one of those scientific problems where it is almost essential to model the entire Earth to attain accurate results and make worthwhile predictions. In an attempt to make climate science more accessible to smaller research facilities, NASA introduced what they call ‘Climate in a Box,’ a system they note acts as a desktop supercomputer.

Running Computational Fluid Dynamics in the Cloud

May 16, 2013 | When it comes to cloud, long distances mean unacceptably high latencies. Researchers from the University of Bonn in Germany examined those latency issues of doing CFD modeling in the cloud by utilizing a common CFD and its utilization in HPC instance types including both CPU and GPU cores of Amazon EC2.
