New functionality bridges physical and virtual environments
BOXBOROUGH, Mass., March 15 — Egenera, a pioneer in converged fabrics and infrastructure automation, has released the latest version of its flagship software product, PAN Manager. This new release provides expanded platform coverage and deeper integration with VMware. These new capabilities increase the agility and flexibility customers need as they migrate to private cloud environments.
The new release of PAN Manager introduces essential new features to further enhance customer experience and benefits when using PAN Manager in conjunction with their virtualization solution. New features include:
By converging infrastructure into a unified compute fabric, PAN Manager simplifies IT management processes and provides provisioning, high availability and disaster recovery services for both bare metal and virtual servers providing complete IT lifecycle automation – from a single user interface. This includes the ability to automatically discover fabric elements, create a comprehensive inventory of IT resources, manage network and storage connections, IO and uplinks, and isolate resources through multi-tenant zoning to ensure secure access for different departments or individual customers.
"At a time when our customers are embracing increasing levels of virtualization, Egenera offers unprecedented value in a virtual environment with our newest release of PAN Manager," said Scott Geng, senior vice president of engineering. "As requirements for resiliency and uptime in the cloud increase, so does our unwavering ability to ensure processing capacity is delivered to applications that need it, when they need it – assuring our customers' confidence in the cloud."

The ever-growing complexity of scientific and engineering problems continues to pose new computational challenges. Thus, we present a novel federation model that enables end-users with the ability to aggregate heterogeneous resource scale problems. The feasibility of this federation model has been proven, in the context of the UberCloud HPC Experiment, by gathering the most comprehensive information to date on the effects of pillars on microfluid channel flow.

Large-scale, worldwide scientific initiatives rely on some cloud-based system to both coordinate efforts and manage computational efforts at peak times that cannot be contained within the combined in-house HPC resources. Last week at Google I/O, Brookhaven National Lab’s Sergey Panitkin discussed the role of the Google Compute Engine in providing computational support to ATLAS, a detector of high-energy particles at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

The study of climate change is one of those scientific problems where it is almost essential to model the entire Earth to attain accurate results and make worthwhile predictions. In an attempt to make climate science more accessible to smaller research facilities, NASA introduced what they call ‘Climate in a Box,’ a system they note acts as a desktop supercomputer.
