Cloudscaling Announces First Open Cloud System Designed for Cloud-Ready Applications


SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 13 — Cloudscaling has announced the industry's first open cloud infrastructure solution for cloud-ready applications. The Cloudscaling Open Cloud System (OCS) is the first infrastructure-as-a-service solution designed to deliver the cost, performance and scalability benefits of Amazon Web Services (AWS), for private or public clouds.

The Cloudscaling OCS is based on the OpenStack open source project and leverages the company's expertise from production OpenStack software deployments at companies such as KT (formerly Korea Telecom) and Internap. Cloudscaling has more production OpenStack experience than any other company.

Open clouds eliminate vendor lock-in, proprietary protocols, closed hardware platforms and excessive enterprise licensing fees sometimes referred to as "software taxation." These advances are made possible through the use of open hardware, open networking, open APIs and open source software. Cloud-ready applications are those that are designed to take advantage of the economics and agility achievable by using open cloud infrastructure. These applications differ fundamentally from traditional applications in that they are more elastic in nature and support higher peak loads. Cloud-ready applications manage failure in software as opposed to hardware, eliminating typical enterprise application dependencies on expensive and proprietary infrastructure solutions.

Cloudscaling OCS has three core components: Open Cloud OS, hardware blueprints and CloudBlocks.

  • Open Cloud OS: An OpenStack-powered cloud operating system for production cloud deployments. Open Cloud OS extends core OpenStack software with production capabilities and features including management, scalability, security and performance.
  • Hardware Blueprints: Proven deployment configurations for compute, storage and networking equipment. Hardware blueprints detail turn-key, scale-engineered hardware configurations to meet specific price/performance and availability targets.
  • CloudBlocks: Cloudscaling's unified architecture integrates Open Cloud OS software with hardware reference blueprints to define modular cloud building blocks.
