Partnership leverages carrier Ethernet exchanges to enable cloud bursting capabilities on a global basis
MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif., Jan. 10 — Morphlabs, the leader in converged Dynamic Infrastructure Services for the enterprise, today announced a strategic partnership with Telx, a network-neutral interconnection and colocation leader. The partnership supports Morphlabs' goal of providing a global platform for delivering the ideal hosted private cloud solution to the enterprise. Morphlabs also announced it is the first cloud provider to join the MEF (Metro Ethernet Forum), the defining body for Carrier Ethernet. The MEF's mission is to accelerate the worldwide adoption of Carrier-class Ethernet networks and services.
By partnering with Telx and joining the MEF, Morphlabs is furthering its commitment to optimizing access to cloud resources around the globe with the mCloud Data Center Unit (DCU), in this case by employing Carrier Ethernet exchanges. Now, enterprises can leverage Morphlabs' Dynamic Resource Scaling (DRS) technology to scale computes and storage on dedicated hardware on-demand – not only locally, but also remotely via a Carrier Ethernet exchange.
"The turnkey nature of Morphlabs' mCloud DCU solution makes it a great fit for us – instantly bringing true Dynamic Infrastructure Services to our customers," said Darryl Brown, director of cloud and media services at Telx. "Offering Morphlabs' solutions in our C3 Cloud Connection Centers gives our Cloud Xchange members an even wider choice of cloud connectivity options."
According to a recent Forrester study, "[I]n geographies with demanding privacy laws like Europe, or in industries with strong compliance regulations, virtual private cloud providers add an alternative that predicts the physical location of data and thus combines privacy requirements with shared infrastructure concepts . . . Forrester's research shows that 93 percent [from 55 recently interviewed cloud computing user companies] are using private cloud, with a further 35 percent using virtual private cloud deployments for productive workloads . . . This means the demand for tools supporting hybrid cloud deployments and cloud bursting scenarios will increase significantly in the next two years. And the maturity of these tools is mission-critical for IT users to reach the high level of industrialization of all in-house processes, on a similar level to how the cloud providers operate themselves." [The Next Maturity Step for Cloud Computing Management, a commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of Morphlabs, October, 2011] The Forrester Custom Technology Adoption Profile commissioned by Morphlabs is now available for download here.
"Partnering with Telx has provided Morphlabs with the connectivity and expertise that we require to lead the charge in amplifying the benefits of efficient computing solutions," said Winston Damarillo, founder and CEO at Morphlabs. "Combining the reach and elasticity afforded by Carrier Ethernet with our Dynamic Resource Scaling innovations puts us on the right path to realize true cloud bursting potential and implement distributed data center capacity."

The ever-growing complexity of scientific and engineering problems continues to pose new computational challenges. Thus, we present a novel federation model that enables end-users with the ability to aggregate heterogeneous resource scale problems. The feasibility of this federation model has been proven, in the context of the UberCloud HPC Experiment, by gathering the most comprehensive information to date on the effects of pillars on microfluid channel flow.

Large-scale, worldwide scientific initiatives rely on some cloud-based system to both coordinate efforts and manage computational efforts at peak times that cannot be contained within the combined in-house HPC resources. Last week at Google I/O, Brookhaven National Lab’s Sergey Panitkin discussed the role of the Google Compute Engine in providing computational support to ATLAS, a detector of high-energy particles at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

When it comes to cloud, long distances mean unacceptably high latencies. Researchers from the University of Bonn in Germany examined those latency issues of doing CFD modeling in the cloud by utilizing a common CFD and its utilization in HPC instance types including both CPU and GPU cores of Amazon EC2.
