Autodesk, maker of the AutoCAD software for design, architecture and engineering use has expanded its cloud-based AutoCAD WS package to support viewing, editing and sharing of 2D Autodesk Inventor DWG files and improvements in mobile and web editing and display options. This update also expands multi-language support.
Autodesk has been making swift moves toward the cloud with its recent rollouts of cloud-based software under its “Project Cumulus” (entered around their Moldflow offering) and “Project Centaur” (focused on Inventor) initiatives in addition to browser and mobile versions of their most popular software products.
In an interview with Develop3D, a spokesperson from Autodesk discussed the role of the cloud by highlighting what is now possible. He stated, “What both cloud-based technologies do offer is the ability to increase the number of simulations that can be carried out in parallel. This is designed to make it possible to find a much better solutions to a specific problem using design of experiments. Even with the latest multi-core workstations running Project Centaur would be limited to 12 jobs at the same time where as Autodesk customers that have tried the new technology are typically running 20-30 jobs in parallel and some have tried over 100.”
Autodesk also noted that the two cloud-based products are designed to run on AWS or Windows Azure and states that as “Modflow Insight offers GPU compute capabilities using Nvidia’s CUDA, we will look into using clouds that use both CPU and GPU and we are working with Nvidia and GPU manufacturers to do this.” It is also likely that they are looking into OpenCL as well.

The Autodesk AutoCAD WS software is available for free and allows for online editing, storage and sharing as well as timeline tools. Users can work via nearly any web browser in addition to an iPad or iPhone.

The private industry least likely to adopt public cloud services for data storage are financial institutions.
