European Privacy Association Solidifies Position on Europe’s Cloudy Future
This week in Barcelona during the Mobile World Congress, the topic of cloud computing was at the forefront of discussions among vendors and world technology leaders. Certainly cloud computing has a vast role to play in the coming mobile paradigm shift, but according to officials from the European Privacy Association, the EU has a cloud strategy of their own as they see cloud as critical to the future.
According to Commissioner Neelie Kroes, “The EU has an important role to play and it should go beyond cloud-friendly. A ‘cloud active’ Europe would help create opportunities in Europe…we can expect productivity gains across Europe’s economy as a whole.”
For an organization devoted to privacy, there are certainly other aspects to cloud computing that are of primary concern. According to the European Privacy Association, growth in cloud computing throughout Europe would lead to better data security as there “would be a shift from thousands of individual businesses to service providers who would be better equipped to handle cyber security threats.”
The organization also sees value in the addition of more robust networks to handle the flood of customers to the cloud. As a whole, the group believes that while security must be at the fore of all conversations, “cloud computing is moving us in the direction of a safe and more secure internet. It is important that European policymakers this and create a sound regulatory environment conducive to the necessary investments.”
