Layer 7 Technologies Inc.
announced that it has joined the Liberty Alliance, a consortium of more
than 150 companies, non-profit and government organizations from around
the globe, committed to developing an open standard for federated
network identity that supports all current and emerging network
devices. Layer 7 will support the use of Liberty-based authentication
systems in its SecureSpan product line.
Web services-based integrations often span business and identity
boundaries, with authentication and authorization operations based on
"federated" identities. Standards like Liberty provide mechanisms to
remotely authenticate and provide secure evidence of authentication
between departments, divisions and business partners. SecureSpan will
use these capabilities to help authenticate messages using a customers'
Liberty infrastructure or Web federation product. Layer 7 joins
companies including American Express, AOL, Fidelity Investments, France
Telecom, General Motors, HP, IBM, Intel, Novell, Oracle, Sun
Microsystems and VeriSign in adopting and developing this standard.
"Layer 7 Technologies has always believed in use of open standards
to help facilitate the rapid and secure deployment of Web services
across security and identity boundaries," said Toufic Boubez, chief
technical officer of Layer 7 Technologies. "The Liberty Alliance
provides a key standard for building federated Web services, and
clearly benefits from the active involvement of both technology vendors
and business customers."
Frank Ding, engineering analysis & technical computing manager at Simpson Strong-Tie, discussed the advantages of utilizing the cloud for occasional scientific computing, identified the obstacles to doing so, and proposed workarounds to some of those obstacles.
