Sarvega, Center For Adv. Defense Studies Create XML Security Lab

Sarvega Inc, a provider of XML networking products, and the Center for Advanced Defense Studies (CADS), a renowned think tank focusing on global information security and defense initiatives, announced the creation of the Advanced XML Security Lab ("AXSL"). The two organizations will contribute resources and expertise to AXSL to conduct advanced research into XML Web Services security, XML vulnerabilities, and the secure exchange of information amongst trading partners. Sarvega and CADS will investigate technologies that will accelerate the adoption and use of XML Web Services throughout the public and private sectors.

Located in Washington, D.C., AXSL research will have implications for multiple government and private sector information sharing initiatives and systems interoperability. Its charter includes investigation of threat scenarios and signatures that impact the deployment of XML Web Services and secure information exchange. AXSL will conduct research of technologies relevant to XML Web Services and information security with the intent of making the technologies commercially available.

"CADS is highly regarded for its considerable expertise in global defense and information security technologies and policies," said Christopher Darby, president and CEO of Sarvega. "We are proud to be associated with such a prestigious organization to investigate cyber threats and security issues surrounding XML Web Services. The formation of AXSL enables us to further our knowledge of XML and Web Services vulnerabilities and to bring relevant products to market faster. Business and government benefit from the focus and expertise that both organizations bring to the lab."

Newton Howard, founder and chairman of CADS stated, "We created the lab to accelerate the understanding of threat signatures and security issues associated with XML Web Services, and to facilitate an understanding of the issues and technologies surrounding the secure exchange of information among governments and trading partners. Sarvega is a leader in developing technologies and products that are essential to this space. Their success in government and the private sector makes Sarvega an ideal partner for CADS. We are pleased to be working with them on such an important initiative."

CometCloud: Using a Federated HPC-Cloud to Understand Fluid Flow in Microchannels

The ever-growing complexity of scientific and engineering problems continues to pose new computational challenges. Thus, we present a novel federation model that enables end-users with the ability to aggregate heterogeneous resource scale problems. The feasibility of this federation model has been proven, in the context of the UberCloud HPC Experiment, by gathering the most comprehensive information to date on the effects of pillars on microfluid channel flow.

CERN, Google, and the Future of Global Science Initiatives

Large-scale, worldwide scientific initiatives rely on some cloud-based system to both coordinate efforts and manage computational efforts at peak times that cannot be contained within the combined in-house HPC resources. Last week at Google I/O, Brookhaven National Lab’s Sergey Panitkin discussed the role of the Google Compute Engine in providing computational support to ATLAS, a detector of high-energy particles at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

NASA Builds 'Climate in a Box'

May 23, 2013 | The study of climate change is one of those scientific problems where it is almost essential to model the entire Earth to attain accurate results and make worthwhile predictions. In an attempt to make climate science more accessible to smaller research facilities, NASA introduced what they call ‘Climate in a Box,’ a system they note acts as a desktop supercomputer.

Running Computational Fluid Dynamics in the Cloud

May 16, 2013 | When it comes to cloud, long distances mean unacceptably high latencies. Researchers from the University of Bonn in Germany examined those latency issues of doing CFD modeling in the cloud by utilizing a common CFD and its utilization in HPC instance types including both CPU and GPU cores of Amazon EC2.
